It's Sunny, Go Surf! And Pick Up Some Garbage

By Samantha Durbin · March 30, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

A heat wave is upon us — you'll find me in the water. Whether it's my pool, or the Pacific, I'm hot tailing it to surf as soon as possible. Something I've been meaning to do is participate in the Surfrider Foundation's Ocean Beach clean-ups every other Sunday. Knowing I'm helping to keep the ocean plastic free, while basking in post-surf satisfaction, is the best way to spend a Sunday morning. I'm thinking of getting a crew together — who's game? Here's the events calendar for the Sunday beach clean-ups (there's one this Sunday, 4/3) and more water-conscious events hosted by the organization. While you're visiting, sign this Rise Above Plastics petition, and vow to do your part in preventing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from growing (I'm #19,527!).

Hump Night: 7x7 El Salvador Celebration at SOM, 2/23

By Samantha Durbin · February 22, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

I can't think of a better way to spend a Wednesday than planning my next surf trip over $3 rum cocktail specials (danger) and $2 El Salvadoran beer at 7x7's El Salvador celebration at SOM bar in the Mission. Though Mexico is at the top of my list, affordable El Salvador is inching up. The party is free, from 7-8:30PM. Oh, and pupusas complimentary of Balompie Cafe. What are pupusas? They sound bomb...come eat one and celebrate tomorrow night!

Supersurf Sunday

By Samantha Durbin · February 6, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Sometimes when the world zags, I zig. San Francisco is always looking for an excuse to party - as am I - but when there is no Superbowl party that strikes your fancy, and the sun is shining brightly, (and you haven't surfed in two months), it's time to get back in the water. My newfound, ahem, time, not only freed me up to find my next trail to blaze, but to enjoy the finer things in life. So screw the Superbowl, I'd rather watch surfers than football players any day.

Jetty conditions were small, ie. perfect for me, and a little windy. I entered upon tide shift (that's me and my beloved Blue Banana), but was just happy to be getting cold, salty slaps in the face. A post-surf relax on the rocks was much needed...Oh, The Packers won. Time for some sweet surf dreams...
